Biomass fuels

Woodchips

Suitable for HEIZOMAT boilers? YES

Woodchips are derived from trees or waste wood such as pallets. Being one of the more common fuel sources woodchips are easy to source and are a cheap fuel.

When talking about woodchips EVERLAST ENERGY likes to emphasise that the chips should preferably be produced from the branches of the trees and not the heart wood, which can be used for building materials or logs.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Low energy consumption
  • Can be produced exclusively from tree residues (brash)
  • Cheaper than pellets

DISADVANTAGES:

  • Larger storage area required

Wood pellets

Suitable for HEIZOMAT boilers? YES

Wood pellets are a high energy fuel. Because the sawdust is compressed tightly to form the pellets they have a high calorific value.

When sourcing pellets ask the suppliers what they are made from, to be truly green they should be made from waste wood or brash, not round timer which can be used for building materials or logs.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Three times the calorific value per volume of woodchips.
  • Easier transit of material

DISADVANTAGES:

  • Consumes electricity during manufacturing
  • Deteriorates over a period of time
  • Deteriorates if in contact with moisture
  • More expensive

Miscanthus grass

Suitable for HEIZOMAT boilers? RHK-AK only

Miscanthus grass, (commonly known as elephant grass) is a fast growing fuel crop. Miscanthus was first grown in Europe as a crop in the 1930s. Miscanthus when grown has a moisture content of 15% so can be by burnt straight away. It can also be used in the production of ethanol.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Can be grown specifically as a fuel crop
  • Easily harvested by farmers
  • Short rotation
  • Can be grown on poor quality soil

DISADVANTAGES:

  • Less calorific value
  • Harder to source at the current time
  • Produces clinker

Short rotation coppice

Suitable for Heizomat boilers? YES

A number of species can be used for coppicing but the main 2 used In the UK are Willow and Poplar. SRC is a purpose made crop for the production of biomass, and is generally harvested every 3 years.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Quick growing
  • No need to replant
  • Can be grown on poor quality soil

DISADVANTAGES:

  • High ash content
  • Less calorific value

Rape seed straw

Suitable for Heizomat boilers? YES

Rape seed straw is an ideal fuel for biomass. By burning rape seed straw you are burning a waist product as rape seed straw is commonly thrown back on the ground. Heizomat manufacture the HEIZOSTROH specifically for chopping rape seed straw.

ADVANTAGES:

  • High calorific value
  • Cheap

DISADVANTAGES:

  • Bulky
  • Requires mechanical handling

Other straws cannot be burned in the HEIZOMAT boiler due to the acid produced corroding the boiler body.
